Sudan's Constituent Assembly promulgates a draft constitution…
May 1973 CE
This document provides for a continuation of presidential government, recognizes the SSU as the only authorized political organization, and supports regional autonomy for the south.
The constitution also stipulates that voters are to choose members for the two hundred and fifty-seat People's Assembly from an SSU-approved slate.
Although it cites Islam as Sudan's official religion, the constitution acknowledges Christianity as the faith of a large number of Sudanese citizens.
