October 1798 CE
A larger French force consisting of three thousand men, and including Wolfe Tone himself, attempts to land in County Donegal near Lough Swilly on October 12, 1798.
They are intercepted by a larger Royal Navy squadron, under Sir John Borlase Warren, and finally surrender after a three hour battle without ever landing in Ireland.
Wolfe Tone is wounded and captured in what is known as the Battle of Tory Island.
