The Allied expeditionary force had landed at Varna, a city on the Black Sea's western coast, in June 1854, but have made little advance from their base there.

In July, the Turks under Omar Pasha cross the Danube into Wallachia and on July 7 engage the Russians in the city of Giurgiu and conquer it.

The capture of Giurgiu by the Turks immediately threatens Bucharest in Wallachia with capture by the same Turkish army.
