Petar II Njegos, the prince-bishop (Vladika) of…
October 1851 CE
Petar II Njegos, the prince-bishop (Vladika) of Montenegro, who is also an accomplished poet, has reformed his administration, battled the Turks, and struggled to obtain a seaport from the Austrians.
When Petar dies in late October, 1851, the Senate, under the influence of Dordije Petrovic (the wealthiest Montenegrin), proclaims Petar's elder brother Pero Tomov Petrovic as Prince (not Vladika).
Nevertheless, in a brief struggle for power, Pero, who commands the support of the Senate, loses to the much younger Danilo Petrovic-Njegos, who has much more support among the people.
Prior to the determination of Petar’s successor, after making peace between Crmnica and Katunjani tribes, and being recognized by Brda and all Montenegrin tribes except for the Bjelopavlici, Danilo travels to Vienna and then to Russia, supposedly to be ordained as Vladika, not Prince.
