Philip Danforth Armour purchases his own refrigerated cars in order to ship fresh meat to the East Coast.
Armour's endeavor will soon became the largest private refrigerator car fleet in the U.S
His firm, Armour and Company, is the primary developer of the Chicago Stockyards.
Armour, who had entered the meat-packing industry in 1870, had pioneered in the shipment of hogs to Chicago for slaughter and in canning and exporting meat.
In order to get his meat products to market Armour follows the lead of rival Gustavus Swift when he established the Armour Refrigerator Line in 1883.
