Philip II, harboring an exalted concept of royal authority and devotion to the Roman Catholic faith, has introduced the Spanish Inquisition into the Netherlands in an attempt to counter spreading Calvinist influences.
In a further effort to centralize his control, he suspends the traditional political privileges of the provinces, sparking an armed revolt in the southern provinces of Brabant and Flanders that begins in 1566 with the Compromise of Breda, the first move against Spanish dominion.
