Pope Alexander VI grants concessions to hasten …

Years: 1495 - 1495

Pope Alexander VI grants concessions to hasten French king Charles VIII’s progress through papal lands, then scrambles to assemble a league against him.

Charles enters Naples in February 1495; a quick initial victory leads to his coronation in Naples on May 12.

The pope’s League of Venice, a hostile coalition of Italian states allied with Emperor Maximilian and King Ferdinand II of Aragon, who dispatches Gonzalo Fernandez de Córdoba to Italy with an army, forces Charles to withdraw and fight his way out of Italy.

Narrowly escaping defeat at the battle of Fornovo (Taro), Charles returns to France.

Ferdinand of Aragon, awarded by Alexander the title “the Catholic” because of his successful intervention, is reinstalled as ruler of Naples.
