Pope Eugene III canonizes Henry II in…
July 1147 CE
Pope Eugene III canonizes Henry II in July, 1147, more than one hundred years after his death, in response to church-inspired legends.
King of Germany and last of the Saxon dynasty of the Holy Roman Emperor, he is the only German king to be canonized.
Together with Henry III, he had been the great architect of cooperation between church and state, following a policy inaugurated by Charlemagne and promoted by Otto I the Great, Holy Roman emperor from 962–973.
His canonization is sometimes justified on the grounds that he was a great representative of the medieval German priestly kings.
