Portuguese settlers from Pernambuco, following a war between the French, their indigenous allies, the Tabajara, and the Portuguese, establish the city of Filipea de Nossa Senhora das Neve (present João Pessoa) in 1585 on the right bank of the Paraíba do Norte River, eleven miles (eighteen kilometers) above its mouth and north of Recife, at the easternmost point of Brazil.
