Antonio López de Santa Anna had written…
March 1847 CE
President Valentín Gómez Farías, driven to desperation, has accepted the offer and allowed Santa Anna to return.
Unknown to President Farías, Santa Anna had secretly been dealing with U.S. representatives to sell all contested territory to the U.S. at a reasonable price on the condition that he be allowed back in Mexico through the U.S. naval blockades.
Santa Anna returns to Mexico taking his place at the head of the army.
Once in this position, he goes back on his word, declaring himself president.
As president, Santa Anna will make an unsuccessful attempt to fight off the U.S. invasion.
