Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, a leading proponent…
1876 CE
Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, a leading proponent of the Great Game, introduces the Royal Titles Act 1876, which creates Queen Victoria Empress of India, putting her at the same level as the Russian Tsar.
In his private correspondence with the Queen, he proposes "to clear Central Asia of Muscovites and drive them into the Caspian".
In order to contain Russia's influence, he launches an invasion of Afghanistan and signs the Cyprus Convention with Turkey, whereby this strategically placed island is handed over to Britain.
After nearly forty years in the House of Commons, Disraeli is elevated to the House of Lords in 1876 when Queen Victoria makes him Earl of Beaconsfield and Viscount Hughenden.
