Prince Karll, in a bid to enhance his country's and his own prestige, obtains from the Great Powers in 1881 the formal recognition of Romania as a kingdom, and rules as Carol I, crowned in May in Bucharest's cathedral with a crown fashioned from an Ottoman cannon seized at Plevna.
