Richard Grenville, who had fought from 1566…
December 1577 CE
Richard Grenville, who had fought from 1566 to 1568 with the imperial army against the Turks in Hungary, then helped to suppress an uprising in Munster, Ireland, in 1568–69, between 1573 and 1575 had made preparations for a voyage of discovery to the South Pacific, hoping to locate a northwest passage from England to China.
For political reasons the expedition has never been made, but Drake adopts the plan for his circumnavigation voyage.
Drake sets sail from Plymouth in December 1577, aboard his flagship, the Pelican, which he will later rename the Golden Hind (or Hinde), together with four other small ships, manned by fewer than two hundred men.
The five ships, none weighing more than one hundred tons, undertake to venture into the domain of the world’s most powerful monarch and empire.
