The Duke of York, having assumed supreme command of the Anglo-Russian expeditionary force, decides to exploit this numerical superiority.

He makes an attempt to break out of his bridgehead in the Zijpe polder on September 19.

This results in the Battle of Bergen which, though ending in a tactical draw, fails to attain the British objectives.
