President Polk mistrusts General Zachary Taylor, who he felt had shown incompetence in the Battle of Monterrey by agreeing to the armistice.

Taylor will later use the Battle of Buena Vista as the centerpiece of his successful 1848 presidential campaign.

Rather than reinforce Taylor's army for a continued advance, President Polk sends a second army under General Winfield Scott, which is transported to the port of Veracruz by sea, to begin an invasion of the Mexican heartland.
