Niagara University is founded by the Congregation of the Mission as Our Lady of Angels Seminary in on November 21, 1856.

The school will move from Buffalo to Niagara Falls, New York, its current location, on May 1, 1857.

After twenty-six years on its new campus, The College and Seminary of Our Lady of Angels will officially change its name to Niagara University on August 7, 1883.
