Concerned Dominican liberals, in the face of…
1888 CE to 1899 CE
Concerned Dominican liberals, in the face of impending dictatorship under Ulises Heureaux, turn to the only remaining figure of stature, Gregorio Luperón.
The elections of 1888 therefore pit Heureaux against his political mentor.
If the dictator feels any respect for his former commander, he does not demonstrate it during the campaign.
Heureaux's agents attack Luperón's campaigners and supporters, arresting and incarcerating considerable numbers of them.
Recognizing the impossibility of a free election under such circumstances, Luperón withdraws his candidacy, declines the entreaties of those of his followers who urge armed rebellion, and flees into exile in Puerto Rico.
