Sir Thomas Dale, commissioned by the Virginia…
May 1611 CE
Sir Thomas Dale, commissioned by the Virginia Company to act as deputy-governor or as "Marshall of Virginia" (a new position) for the Virginia Colony under the authority of Lord De La Warr, had been sent with three ships, arriving at Jamestown on May 19, 1611, with men, cattle, and provisions.
Lord De La Warr has become so ill that in the spring of 1611 he sails home to England, where he will publish a book about Virginia, The Relation of the Right Honourable the Lord De-La-Warre, of the Colonie, Planted in Virginia, in 1611.
Dale, finding the conditions unhealthy and greatly in need of improvement, immediately calls for a meeting of the Jamestown Council, and establishes crews to rebuild Jamestown.
