Sonthonax and Polverel are served with a recall order from the French Convention; on June 9, they sail to France to face charges derived from the many disasters that have taken place under their administration, including the sack and burning of Le Cap.

Before his departure, Sonthonax gives his commissioner's medal to the maroon leader Dieudonné and invests Dieudonné with his commissioner's authority.
