Sophia Alekseyevna, the Russian regent since 1682, has made a few concessions to the small semi-urban settlements, or posads, and loosened detention policies towards runaway peasants, which has caused dissatisfaction among the nobles.
One of the most important highlights of her foreign policy, as engineered by her lover, the capable courtier and politician Prince Vasily Galitzine, is the Eternal Peace Treaty of 1686 signed in Moscow on May 6 with Poland, by which Russia obtains Kiev and the territory east of the Dnieper River in exchange for a promise to join a European coalition against the Turks.
