Stephen Langton (who since his consecration has lived at Pontigny Abbey in Burgundy) and his fellow exiles return to England in July.

Taking his seat at Canterbury, his first episcopal act is to absolve the King, who swears that unjust laws should be repealed and the liberties granted by Henry I should be observed—an oath that he almost immediately violates.

Stephen now becomes becomes active in English politics, leading the struggle against King John.
