Sultan Mehmed IV had appointed Yuri Khmelnytsky, who had been his prisoner, Hetman of the Right-bank Ukraine.

Khmelnytsky, a Zaporozhian Cossack political and military leader, is the son of the famous Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky.

The Sultan in July 1677 orders Ibrahim Pasha to lead an army of one hundred and twenty thousand men to advance on Chyhyryn.
