August 1678 CE
Sultan Mehmed, unhappy with the terms of the Treaty of Zorawno, sends Turkish forces under Kara Mustafa to drive the Russians and Poles out of the Ukraine.
Kara Mustafa’s army (approximately eight thousand men) had in July 1678 laid siege once again to Chyhyryn.
The Russian and Ukrainian armies (two hundred thousand men) break through the Turkish covering force but the Turks had already managed to occupy Chigirin on August 11.
The Russian army retreats over the Dnieper, beating off the pursuing Turkish army, which will now finally leave them in peace.
