Swedish forces, led by Carl Carlsson Gyllenhielm,…
March 1599 CE
Swedish forces, led by Carl Carlsson Gyllenhielm, now march towards Kalmar to lay siege to the city.
Johan Larsson Sparre defends the walls and the castle in the hope that the King will return to Sweden, but he never receives any assistance and during the night of March first the city is assaulted.
Gyllenhielm and Samuel Nilsson are ordered to attack the north gate.
Duke Charles himself leads the attack on the western gate.
Charles’s men manage, after a short and sharp fight, to scale the walls.
The opportunity to capture Kalmar Castle in the same stroke is lost, however, as the soldiers have begun looting the city.
