Japan, taking advantage of governmental turmoil within Korea, forces a commercial agreement on the Yi kingdom  in 1876.

A governmental decree in this year abolishes the samurai, Japan’s professional warrior class.

Samurai are banned from carrying swords in Japan and their stipends are replaced by one-time grants of income-bearing bonds.
