The ailing Heraclius, after violent spasms, dies of dropsy on February 11, 641, having bequeathed the empire to his two elder sons, the consumptive Constantine III of his first marriage and Heraklonas, his son by his second wife (and niece) Martina.
Twenty-nine-year-old Constantine III, also called Heraclius Constantine, had been coemperor with his father from 613 and with his half brother from 638.
