Fighting ceases for the winter of 1841…
December 1841 CE
False reports sent by Yishan to the Emperor in Beijing result in the continued British threat being downplayed.
In late 1841 the Daoguang Emperor discovers that his officials in Canton and Amoy have been sending him embellished reports.
He orders the governor of Guangxi, Liang Chang-chü, to send him clear accounts of the events in Canton, noting that since Guangxi is a neighboring province, Liang must be receiving independent accounts.
He warns Liang that he will be able to verify his information by obtaining secret inquiries from other places.
Yishan is recalled to the capital and faces trial by the imperial court, which removes him from command.
Now aware of the severity of the British threat, Chinese towns and cities begin to fortify against naval incursions.
