The Cayman Islands, a three-island group in…
May 1503 CE
The Cayman Islands, a three-island group in the Caribbean Sea, are located about one hundred miles (one hundred and sixty kilometers) south of Cuba and one hundred and eighty miles (two hundred and ninety kilometers) northwest of Jamaica.
Archaeological studies of Grand Cayman have found no evidence that humans occupied the islands prior to May 10, 1503, when Christopher Columbus, en route to Santo Domingo, sights them.
Columbus finds the two small islands—Cayman Brac and Little Cayman—and it is these two islands that he names "Las Tortugas" after the numerous sea turtles seen swimming in the surrounding waters.
