The Celtic church has made inroads in converting the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Northumbria and Mercia to their version of Christianity, but the Roman church has gained preemince in the kingdoms of the south.
At the Synod of Whitby, convened in 664, King Oswiu of Northumbria, with the encouragement of Wilfrid, abbot of Ripon, had adopted Roman usages.
Wilfrid in 669 becomes bishop of York.
