French Louisiana east of the Mississippi goes…
1763 CE
After the signing of the treaties and the conclusion of the Timberlake Expedition, Henry Timberlake visits London with three Cherokee leaders: Ostenaco, Standing Turkey, and Wood Pigeon (Ata-wayi).
The Cherokee guests visit the Tower of London, meet the playwright Oliver Goldsmith, draw massive crowds, and have an audience with King George III.
Their interpreter, William Shorey, had died on the voyage to England, making communication nearly impossible.
Hearing of the Cherokees' warm welcome in London, South Carolinians view their reception as a sign of imperial favoritism at the colonists' expense, especially in view of the Royal Proclamation of 1763 (which prohibits settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains), and is a foundation of one of the major irritants for the colonials leading up to the American Revolution.
