1588 CE
The conflict between Adal and Ethiopia having subsided, the conquest of the highland regions of Ethiopia and Adal by the Oromo (namely, through military expansion and the installation of the Gadaa sociopolitical system) ends in the contraction of both regional powers and changes the dynamics of the region for centuries to come.
What has happened, in essence, is that the populations of the highlands have not ceased to exist as a result of the Gadaa expansion, but have simply been incorporated into a different sociopolitical system.
Ethiopia’s emperor, Sarsa Dengel, has spent his reign in constant campaigning, repelling Ottoman advances inland from the Red Sea; and Oromo advances from the south.
He campaigns once more against the Oromo in his twenty-fifth regnal year.
He also undertakes a punitive expedition against the Ottoman Turks in response to their raids in the northern provinces.
The Ottomans attempt to advance inland to capture Debarwa in 1588.
