October 1853 CE
The Crimean War appears to offer an opportunity for Greece to gain major territorial concessions from the sultan.
When Russia attacks the Ottoman Empire in 1853, King Otto of Greece sees an opportunity to expand north and south into Ottoman areas that have large Greek Christian majorities.
Greece does not coordinate its plans with Russia, does not declare war, and received no outside military or financial support.
As an Orthodox nation, Greece has considerable support in Russia, but the Russian government decides it is too dangerous to help Greece expand its holdings.
When the Russians invades the Principalities, the Ottoman forces are tied down, so Greece invades Thessaly and Epirus under the pretext of protecting Balkan Christians.
