Strains begin to appear in the relations…
1780 CE to 1791 CE
Administrative reforms during the early 1770s have greatly increased the cost of government.
The company periodically seeks to raise taxes to cover these expenditures and thereby provokes the resistance of the planters.
A war breaks out in 1781 between the Netherlands and Britain, which results in the British occupation of Berbice, Essequibo, and Demerara.
Some months later, France, allied with the Netherlands, seizes control of the colonies.
The French govern for two years, during which they construct a new town, Longchamps, at the mouth of the Demerara River.
When the Dutch regain power in 1784, they move their colonial capital to Longchamps, which they rename Stabroeck.
The capital eventually will become known as Georgetown.
