Archaeological excavation of sites on the Nile…

7821 BCE – 6094 BCE Near East

Archaeological excavation of sites on the Nile above the first cataract (just south of present Aswan) has confirmed human habitation in the river valley during the Paleolithic period that spans more than sixty thousand years of Sudanese history.

People of a Neolithic culture have settled into a sedentary way of life here by the eighth millennium BCE in fortified mud-brick villages, where they supplement hunting and fishing on the Nile with grain gathering and cattle herding.

Contact with Egypt probably occurs at a formative stage in the culture's development because of the steady movement of population along the Nile River.
