When men from his flagship, HMS Venerable, clamber up into the rigging and roar three cheers in a prearranged signal for the revolt to begin on May 1, Duncan initially threatens to run the ringleader through with his sword.
Calmed by his subordinates, he instead assembles his officers and the Royal Marines aboard his ship and advances on the men in the rigging, demanding to know what they are doing.
So fierce is his tone that the men fall silent and hesitantly return to their quarters except for five ringleaders, whom he admonishes personally on his quarterdeck before issuing a general pardon and dismissing them to their duty.
The following week, he assembles all of the men and demands to know whether they will follow his orders: in response, the crew nominates a spokesman, who apologizes for their actions.
A week later, when a similar outbreak of mutiny affects the fourth rate ship, HMS Adamant, under Captain William Hotham, Duncan again acts decisively, coming aboard Adamant as the crew rebels and demanding to know if there is any man who disputes his authority.
When a sailor steps forward, Duncan seizes him by his shirt and dangles him over the side of the ship with one arm crying, "My lads—look at this fellow—he who dares to deprive me of command of the fleet".
