The election of the Likud bloc has brought relations between Jordan and Israel to low ebb.
Menachem Begin, who has greatly accelerated the program of constructing Jewish settlements in the West Bank and Gaza, is determined to annex and retain all of the West Bank, which Israel now calls Judaea and Samaria.
Under the terms of the Camp David Accords in 1978, Israel commits itself to granting autonomy to the Palestinians and to negotiating the future status of the occupied territories, but King Hussein condemns the agreement and completely breaks off the fifteen-year secret negotiations with Israel.
