The European republican revolutionary movement of 1848…
January 1848 CE
The European republican revolutionary movement of 1848 begins in Italy on January 9 with a local revolution in Sicily, which breaks away from the Kingdom of Naples (the Bourbon Kingdom of the Two Sicilies) and erects an independent government.
Starting as a popular insurrection, the revolution at first only takes the form of a nationalist rising against Austria led by the king of Sardinia under the Italian tricolor, the “white, red and green”.
It soon takes on overtones of Sicilian separatism and spreads throughout the island.
Piecemeal reforms prove inadequate to satisfy the revolutionaries, both noble and bourgeois, who are determined to have a new and more liberal constitution.
