The British agree in 1859 to a treaty that recognizes Honduran sovereignty over the Islas de la Bahia.
Some of the British settlers in the area object to this transfer and appeal to Walker for help.
Walker evidently thinks that his return to Central America will be welcomed by the Honduran liberals, who are once again trying to oust Guardiola.
Walker lands on the Honduran coast in 1860 but finds little support and encounters determined opposition from both the Hondurans and the British.
He surrenders to the British, who promptly hand him over to Honduran authorities.
A few days later, he dies in front of a Honduran firing squad.
