The main Russian forces, led by Ivan Paskevich, cross the Hungarian border on June 17, and together with the Austrian troops, led by Julius Jacob von Haynau, start the final assault against revolutionary Hungary.
The Hungarian revolutionary troops, numbering one hundred and seventy-three thousand soldiers, which even before the Russian attack were inferior regarding in numbers and in the quality of their weapons and war industry, face a force of three hundred and seventy thousand Austro-Russian forces, supplemented by tens of thousands of Croatian, Serbian and Romanian insurgents, who serve the Habsburg imperial interests.
