The United Kingdom and the Trucial Sheikhdoms…
March 1892 CE
The United Kingdom and the Trucial Sheikhdoms establish closer bonds in an 1892 treaty, similar to treaties entered into by the UK with other Persian Gulf principalities, primarily in reaction to the ambitions of other European countries, namely France and Russia.
The sheikhs agree not to dispose of any territory except to the United Kingdom and not to enter into relationships with any foreign government other than the United Kingdom without its consent.
This treaty, the 'Exclusive Agreement', is signed by the Rulers of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and Umm Al Quwain between March 6 and 8, 1892.
It will subsequently be ratified by the Viceroy of India and the British Government in London.
