The Western Allied Baltic Fleet tries to destroy heavily defended Russian dockyards at Sveaborg outside Helsinki in August 1854, in the same month that a Franco-British naval force captures and destroys the Russian Bomarsund fortress on Åland Islands.

More than one thousand enemy guns had tested the strength of the fortress for two days.

Despite the shelling, the sailors of the 120-gun ship Rossiya, led by Captain Viktor Poplonsky, defend the entrance to the harbur.

he Allies fired over twenty thousand shells but fail  to defeat the Russian batteries.

The British now build a massive new fleet of more than three hundred and fifty gunboats and mortar vessels, which will become known as the Great Armament, but the war will end before the attack is launched.
