Alexander Berkman, a leading member of the Anarchist movement, tries to kill American industrialist Henry Clay Frick on July 23, 1892, in retaliation for Frick's hiring of Pinkerton detectives to break up the Homestead Strike, resulting in the deaths of seven steelworkers.
Although badly wounded, Frick survives, and Berkman is arrested and will eventually be sentenced to twenty-two years in prison.
