The French invasion of Spain in 1808…

David Thompson has conducted a two-year exploration of the present-day U.S. states of Washington, Idaho and Montana from 1808 to 1810.

Five people of the Boyd had been spared in the massacre: Ann Morley and her baby, in a cabin; Apprentice Thomas Davis (or Davison), hidden in the hold; the second mate; and two-year-old Betsy Broughton, taken by a local chief who puts a feather in her hair and keeps her for three weeks before rescue.

The mate had been killed and eaten when his usefulness in making fishhooks was exhausted.

When news of the massacre reaches European settlements, Captain Alexander Berry undertakes a rescue mission aboard The City of Edinburgh.

Berry rescues the four survivors, and his crew finds piles of human bones on the shoreline, with many evincing cannibalism.

Captain Berry captures two Māori chiefs responsible for the massacre, at first holding them for ransom for the return of survivors.

Berry subsequently threatens the chiefs after the survivors are returned that they will be taken to Europe in order to answer for their crimes unless they release the Boyd's papers.

After the papers are given to him, he releases the chiefs, making it a condition of their release that they will be "degraded from their rank, and received among the number of his slaves", although he never expects this condition to be complied with. They express gratitude for the mercy.

Berry's gesture avoids further bloodshed—an inevitability had the chiefs been executed.

The rescued four people are taken on board Berry's ship bound for the Cape of Good Hope.

However, the ship encounters storms and is damaged, and after repairs will arrive in Lima, Peru, where Mrs. Morely will die.

The boy, called Davis or Davidson, will go from Lima to England aboard the Archduke Charles, and later work for Berry in New South Wales and drown while exploring the entrance to the Shoalhaven River with Berry in 1822.

The child of Mrs. Morely and Betsy Broughton will be taken onward by Berry to Rio de Janeiro, from where they will return to Sydney in May 1812 aboard the Atalanta.

Betsy Broughton will marry Charles Throsby, nephew of the explorer Charles Throsby, and die in 1891.

Frederick Hasselborough, whose surname is also spelled Hasselburgh and Hasselburg, is an Australian sealer from Sydney who discovers Campbell Island, in the sub-Antarctic region, on January 4, 1810, and the Macquarie Islands, both uninhabited, on July 11, 1810).

He claims both for Britian and annexes them it to the colony of New South Wales.

Hasselborough makes his discoveries on the sealing brig Perseverance, which is owned by shipowner Robert Campbell's Sydney-based company Campbell & Co. (whence the island's name).

Hasselborough reports a wreck "of ancient design" on Macquarie Island (named for Lachlan Macquarie, installed on January 1 as the governor of New South Wales) which has given rise to speculation that the island may have been visited before by Polynesians or others

Captain Hasselborough is drowned on November 4, 1810, in Perseverance Harbour, the long fjord that nearly bisects Campbell island, opening out to sea on the east coast.

Britain's trade deficit with China had turned into a surplus by 1804, leading to seven million silver dollars going to India between 1806 and 1809.

Meanwhile, Americans have entered the opium trade with less expensive but inferior Turkish opium and by 1810 have around ten percent of the trade in Canton. (Layton, Thomas N. (1997). The Voyage of the 'Frolic': New England Merchants and the Opium Trade. Stanford University Press.

In the same year the Qing Emperor issues a further imperial edict calling for a total ban on opium in China.

The decree has little effect.

The Qing government, far away in Beijing in the north of China, will be unable to halt opium smuggling in the southern provinces.

The Saint Petersburg main military engineering school becomes in 1810 the first engineering higher learning institution in the Russian Empire, after the addition of officers' classes, and the application of a five-year term of teaching.

The Economic War Between Britain and France (1806–1810) – The Continental System vs. British Orders in Council

By 1806, Napoleon had become the undisputed master of continental Europe, effectively excluding Britain from European trade. However, his naval defeat at Trafalgar (1805) ensured that he could never directly invade Britain, forcing him to seek alternative means of warfare—thus launching an economic conflict known as the Continental System.

The Continental System – Napoleon’s Economic Blockade (1806–1810)

• The Berlin Decree (November 21, 1806)

  • Napoleon forbade all French, allied, or neutral ships from trading with Britain.
  • The aim was to cripple British trade, weaken its industrial growth, and ruin its economy.

• The Milan Decree (December 1807)

  • Declared that any neutral ships that used British ports or paid British tariffs were to be treated as British vessels and seized by France.

• Napoleon hoped to isolate Britain economically, believing that if he could collapse Britain’s trade, he could force it to make peace on French terms.

British Response – The Orders in Council (November 11, 1807)

• Britain, controlling the seas, countered Napoleon’s blockade with its own restrictions:

  • The Orders in Council prohibited French trade with Britain, its allies, or any neutral nations.
  • British warships were ordered to blockade French and allied ports.
  • Any ship trading with France had to stop in a British port first for inspection—otherwise, it was liable to seizure by the Royal Navy.

• Britain’s goal was to disrupt Napoleon’s economy while maintaining its own trade dominance.

The Economic War Escalates (1807–1810)

• The Continental System hurt many European economies, as countries under French rule suffered from trade restrictions.
• Britain, with its global empire, was able to find alternative markets in the Americas and Asia, mitigating the impact of the blockade.
• Smuggling flourished, particularly through Spain, Portugal, and the Baltic, undermining the effectiveness of both the French and British policies.
• The economic strain led to tensions between Napoleon and his allies, as they resented being forced into the blockade, which often hurt them more than it hurt Britain.

Napoleon’s Retaliation and the Path to War with America (1810–1812)

• By 1810, Napoleon realized the Continental System was not working and announced the revocation of the Berlin and Milan Decrees.
• However, Britain refused to repeal its Orders in Council, continuing its naval blockade and trade restrictions.
• The United States, caught between the two economic giants, suffered greatly from the disruptions to neutral trade.
• American merchants and politicians increasingly demanded war with Britain, believing that the British policies violated American neutrality and sovereignty.

This economic conflict between Britain and France not only failed to decisively weaken either power, but it also set the stage for the War of 1812, as tensions between Britain and the United States boiled over due to trade restrictions and British naval actions against American shipping.

Thus, while Napoleon’s Continental System sought to strangle Britain economically, it instead dragged more nations into war, contributing to his eventual downfall.

Samuel Hahnemann, the originator of homeopathy, publishes "Organon of the Rational Art of Healing", the first systematic treatise, containing all his detailed instructions on the subject, in 1810.

Born in Meissen, Saxony near Dresden, his father, along with many other family members, had been a painter and designer of porcelain, for which the town of Meissen is famous.

As a young man, Hahnemann had become proficient in a number of languages, including English, French, Italian, Greek and Latin, and eventually made a living as a translator and teacher of languages, gaining further proficiency in Arabic, Syriac, Chaldaic and Hebrew.

After studying medicine for two years at Leipzig, Hahnemann had moved to Vienna, citing Leipzig's lack of clinical facilities.

Studying there for ten months, he concluded a term of further study at the University of Erlangen, graduating as an MD with honors on August 10, 1779.

His poverty may have forced him to choose Erlangen, as the school's fees were lower.

Hahnemann's thesis was titled Conspectus adfectuum spasmodicorum aetiologicus et therapeuticus (A Dissertation on the Causes and Treatment of Cramps).

In 1781, Hahnemann had taken a village doctor's position in the copper-mining area of Mansfeld, Saxony, and soon married Johanna Henriette Kuchler, with whom he will eventually have eleven children.

After abandoning medical practice, and while working as a translator of scientific and medical textbooks, Hahnemann travels around Saxony for many years, staying in many different towns and villages for varying lengths of time, never living far from the River Elbe.

Hahnemann claims that the medicine of his time did as much harm as good.

After giving up his practice around 1784, he has made his living chiefly as a writer and translator, while resolving also to investigate the causes of medicine's alleged errors.

While translating William Cullen's A Treatise on the Materia Medica, Hahnemann had encountered the claim that cinchona, the bark of a Peruvian tree, was effective in treating malaria because of its astringency.

Believing that other astringent substances are not effective against malaria, Hahnemann had begun to research cinchona's effect on the human body by self-application.

Noting that the drug induced malaria-like symptoms in himself, he concluded that it would do so in any healthy individual.

This led him to postulate a healing principle: "that which can produce a set of symptoms in a healthy individual, can treat a sick individual who is manifesting a similar set of symptoms."

This principle, like cures like, becomes the basis for an approach to medicine which he gives the name homeopathy, a term first used in his essay "Indications of the Homeopathic Employment of Medicines in Ordinary Practice", published in Hufeland's Journal in 1807. Hahnemann tests substances for the effect they produce on a healthy individual and tries to deduce from this the ills they will heal.

From his research, he initially concluded that ingesting substances to produce noticeable changes in the body resulted in toxic effects.

He then attempted to mitigate this problem through exploring dilutions of the compounds he was testing.

He claimed that these dilutions, when prepared according to his technique of succussion (systematic mixing through vigorous shaking) and potentization, remain effective in alleviating the same symptoms in the sick.

Having begun practicing this new technique around 1792, Hahnemann had first published an article about the homeopathic approach in a German language medical journal in 1796, followed by a series of further essays.

A statue to the Russian commander Joseph Cornelius O'Rourke and his men will be erected in 1910 on the centenary of their decisive victory in the battle, which frees the city from Turkish domination.

When the Turks threatened the southern edge of the empire, O'Rourke equipped a regiment at his own expense and marched to Serbia to fight against the Ottoman Empire.
 
The O'Rourke family were originally members of the Jacobite Irish nobility; they had fled Ireland after the defeat by the Protestant Williamites at the Battle of the Boyne in 1691.

The majority of the family had moved as refugees to France during this time.

The O'Rourkes are a prominent Gaelic aristocratic family who had lost lands in the Elizabethan and Cromwellian conquests, and several family members had emigrated to Russia.

The family members are descendants of ninth-century kings of Connacht and ruled the ancient kingdom of Breifne in the northwest of the country until they were unseated during the Elizabethan conquest in the sixteenth century.

During the reign of Elizabeth in Russia in the eighteenth century, one branch of the O'Rourkes moved to Livonia, a province of the Russian Empire at the time.

O'Rourke was born in Dorpat in 1772.

By this time, the family had intermarried and had been completely absorbed into Russian high society.

According to customs, O'Rourke was immediately enrolled at birth in the Russian Imperial Guard.

His father was Count Cornelius O'Rourke, who had retired in 1788 with the rank of Major-General.

After education in a military school and military training, he first saw action as a young man in Zürich against the French Revolutionary Army.

He served under General Kutuzov in 1805 at the Battle of Austerlitz and was awarded the Order of Saint George.

The "German elk" (the moose of continental Europe) disappears from the Caucaus by 1810.
