The Omaha tribe suffers from the widespread smallpox pandemic of 1837–1838, which causes devastating losses among Native Americans from Canada to New Mexico.

All clergy except the Catholics abandon the Osage during the crisis.

Most survivors of the epidemic have received vaccinations against the disease.

The Osage believe that the loyalty of Catholic priests, who stay with them and also die in the epidemic, creates a special covenant between the tribe and the Catholic Church, but they do not convert in great number.
