The capture of Lee presents the Howes…
December 1776 CE
As with a number of other Continental Army leaders, he had previously served in the British Army.
Because of this the Howes at first treat him as a deserter, with threats of military punishment.
However, Washington intervenes, tying the treatment of Lee to the treatment of prisoners he holds.
Lee is ultimately treated well, and apparently offers the British commanders advice on how to win the war.
Because the Americans do not have a prisoner of comparable rank, Lee will remains a prisoner in New York until 1778, when he will be exchanged for Richard Prescott.
