The parties finally negotiate a three-year truce…
September 1192 CE
The parties finally negotiate a three-year truce on September 2, 1192.
The Peace of Ramleh leaves the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem with only a small strip of land along the Mediterranean coast.
The coast from Jaffa north to Tyre remains in Christian hands, but Ascalon’s defenses are to be demolished and handed back to Saladin.
Pilgrims are to have free access to the holy places.
Saladin retains Jerusalem, but Christian pilgrims will be free to visit the city.
The retention of Jaffa will allow the Crusader kingdom to reconsolidate its control of the coastal lands of Palestine from its new capital at Acre.
Saladin withdraws to his capital at Damascus.
