The plentiful harvest of 1868 ends the Orissa famine.
In the two years of the famine, the Government of British India has spent approximately nine and a half million rupees on famine relief for thirty-five million units (i.e., one person per day); a large proportion of the cost, however, is the high price of the imported grain.
Approximately four million to five million have died in the region during the two-year famine.
