The long conflict between church and state…
1864 CE to 1875 CE
The long conflict between church and state in Uruguay had also begun during the period preceding the Great War.
It involved Freemasons in government circles and resulted in the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1859 (they are allowed to return in 1865) and the secularization of cemeteries in 1861.
Until then the church had has almost exclusive control over the cemeteries.
