The German Empire, upon establishing the colony of Kamerun in 1884, had begins a steady push inland.

The Germans encounter resistance from the native people, who do not want the Germans to establish themselves on this land.

Under the influence of Germany, commercial companies are left to regulate local administrations.

These concessions use forced labor of the African natives to make a profit.

The labor is used on banana, rubber, palm oil, and cocoa plantations.

They initiate projects to improve the colony's infrastructure, relying on a harsh system of forced labor, which is much criticized by the other colonial powers.
