The Protestant King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden…
November 1631 CE
The Protestant King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden has marched from Halle clear across Germany, establishing his winter quarters near the Rhine, making plans for the invasion of the rest of the Holy Roman Empire.
Maximilian, fearing the erosion of his Catholic League power base, had earlier concluded an alliance with France, the emperor’s archenemy, but the Treaty of Fontainebleu proves worthless in late 1631, as Gustavus Adolphus (allied with France) attacks Bavaria, which does not receive French aid.
France argues that Bavaria had initiated conflict with Sweden, and as such had nullified the treaty.
In actuality, French aid to both Sweden and Bavaria would be counterproductive.
Cardinal Richelieu had been under the impression that Sweden would respect Bavaria's neutrality during Sweden's war against the Habsburgs.
Because the Treaty of Fontainebleau had failed to provide security for Bavaria, Maximilian allies his state with the Imperial party of Vienna.
